Quality assurance
The General Medical Council (GMC) promotes and protects the health of the public by ensuring proper standards in medicine. The GMC produce guidance on Maintaining Good Medical Practice can be found at www.gmc-uk.org, and includes the following sections:
Keeping up to date
I am registered with The Royal College of Physicians for Continuous Professional Development; I exceed the minimum annual credit requirements every year.
Maintaining Performance
I am an experienced and expert endoscopist , having carried out over 5000 procedures. My success rate in colonoscopy is over 95% and my complication rate is less than 1 in 1000 procedures. I regularly audit my performance in endoscopy, and have also been involved in several departmental audits, including the use of azathioprine and methotrexate in inflammatory bowel disease, the outcome of endoscopy for gastrointestinal bleeding, and the complications of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy
Teaching and Training
I teach medical undergraduates from the Royal Free and University College London Medical School and have twice been cited as a ‘valued teacher’.
In 1997 I designed the day release programme for North East Thames’ trainees ‘Day Release’ Training in Gastroenterology, and this is still in use.
